I think I know why baby monitors were invented...so that mom's didn't lose their minds with the phantom cries they hear in their heads when their babies are sleeping. It's kind of funny because I listen to cries all throughout the day and when he's finally sleeping I still hear the cries. But sometimes the phantom cries are real and then I feel bad because James has been screaming for a while. I suppose it's good for his lungs...right?
I read two books recently and would recommend them to new moms before their babies come. The first one I would read if I could do it all again would be On Becoming Babywise. It talks about three things: feed time, wake time, sleep time, repeat. That would have been a good routine to follow because I'm pretty sure I was trying to feed James to sleep every time just so he would sleep, but he would always wake up after a few minutes because he spit up or had a burp or something related to feeding. This new cycle is much better. It's kind of a rough transition for both of us, but we are getting the hang of it. The other book is Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Baby. That one talks about the rule of 1-2 hours of wake time before putting baby back to sleep. I read this one first and it's been true almost to the dot. After about 2 hours of being awake James usually gets overtired and then fights sleep, but if I time it just right he usually drifts off to sleep easily.
