Last Minute Camping Trip

It was 4:00 PM in the afternoon three days before Christmas. Chris had work off. Boys had school off. We looked at each other and decided to go camping. Well, we decided that Chris and the three older boys would go camping and I would come back home and sleep with the two little boys. We learned we had to be there by 5 in order to get a camping spot so....we had the boys pack a bag and throw their sleeping bags into the van a while we grabbed our camping boxes and loaded up. They were all so excited. Chris was on the road by 4:34. But the campsite was 30 min away. He called ahead and they said they’d wait for him because he was only going to be a few minutes after 5. I finished packing for them because they of course left the little bag of clothes they’d packed for themselves, fed the baby, and grabbed pizzas on my way there for dinner. I was glad to see them doing something fun, but I was glad to go home and leave them there. Liam fell asleep in the car on the way home and Anders screamed the whole way. I stayed up too late enjoying the silence. I almost didn’t go back the next day because it was so frustrating for me the night before, but I did. And the boys were happy to see me because they thought it was bringing food. I was a little annoyed because sometimes it feels like all I do is cook and clean and cook and clean and do laundry and it feels like nobody cares. Normal mom feeling right? But then Chris looks at me and says, “yeah, but you know when they all grow up and leave the nest they are going to give you all the credit.” Probably true. We had a good rest of the day enjoying nature and each other. Not bad for a 15 min. Campout.

How we city dwellers forage for firewood.

Nothing quite as therapeutic as staring into a campfire.

LOVE that I married this man. He’s the best dad for these little boys of ours.
